Maybe Rest and Momentum Aren’t Apposites.

My mind is halfway between work and the spring break beer calling my name. If I’m being honest, my mind is drifting toward vacation. The last little bit of my spring "break" before the island turns on. Tourist season and summer are knocking on our door and March is always a little preview of what is to come.
In March, the energy changes. The light lingers a little longer. The calendar starts filling up again. There’s momentum in the air... events, holidays, seasonal releases, better weather... people ready to get out of the house after their winter hibernation.
But I’ve been thinking lately… maybe rest and momentum aren’t opposites.
In brewing, there’s constant movement, grain milled, tanks filled, kegs tapped, but the magic happens in the stillness. Fermentation requires patience. Flavor develops in the quiet. Growth doesn’t always look loud. And maybe life isn’t so different.
March asks us to move forward, but it also offers something softer. The silent bloom of new life. The first warm patio days. A light lager with just a touch of dry-hopping.
I sat on my patio this past Sunday and enjoyed my coffee (don't worry- patio beers also happened at GIB that afternoon) in the stillness of what felt like a perfect spring day. The sun shining through the branches, my kids playing in the yard and the horizon of more outdoor activities and beach days when we have been sheltered indoors this winter. I was reminded that sometimes vacation isn’t a plane ticket. Sometimes it’s just when you feel fully present, listening to the birds chirp, enjoying the cool breeze in your hair, taking in all the goodness that spring can give you.
At Galveston Island Brewing, we feel both sides of it this month. The buzz of momentum as our beers roll out and our event calendar fills, and the steady reminder that this place was built to be a pause button, too. Maybe the goal isn’t choosing between movement and rest. Maybe it’s finding both. We know that either way, we have the tools to help you celebrate spring loudly or simply sit, sip and exhale.
Until next time,
The Beer Philosopher
