The Year of the Fire Horse

Some years, the calendar just gets it right. And for us- this month hits the nail on the head.
February starts on Sunday and ends perfectly on a Saturday (4 full weeks on the calendar, a beautiful site for my Type-A eyes). Valentine's Day is poetically placed on a Saturday. Fat Tuesday and the Chinese New Year land on the same day! A rare overlap of two celebrations built on tradition and coming together before stepping into something new.
A friend of mine over a beer, was so fired up (pun intended) about the Chinese New Year. In Chinese astrology, each year combines one zodiac animal with one element, and 2026 is a rare combination... the powerful Fire Horse. It only comes around once every 60 years. The Horse symbolizes energy, freedom, confidence, and forward momentum, while the Fire element adds passion, intensity, and transformation to those qualities. This pairing is traditionally seen as a year that encourages bold action, innovation, and moving forward with determination, a time to take chances, pursue big ideas, and embrace momentum rather than hesitate.
Now here at GIB, our horse is ALWAYS running, but I can say without a doubt that we are fired up for this year. We have come to a new chapter at GIB (staff and kitchen to name a few), and shed some of they old layers that may have felt like like they were weighing us down.
The fire horse energy feels right at home here as we launch into Mardi Gras season. Mardi Gras beads fly and the crowds rally late into the night. All of Galveston saddles up and charges forward to shower the island in purple (justice), green (faith), and gold (power). And as we head towards fasting (the end goal of Mardi Gras) we are glutinous in our full cups of Mardi Gras Blonde and seas of muffulettas and king cakes that fill houses all around town.
Energy, confidence, and charging ahead with purpose. Movement, bold decisions, and reinvention. No standing still. No easing in. Just picking a direction and going for it. 2 feet in with a powerful motivational force behind it. 2026 is our year... and we hope you are fired up and ready to take the reigns of your horse in one hand, and an ice cold GIB brew in the other... and ride into it with us!
Until next time,
The Beer Philosopher
