Patience Really is a Virtue
As I was laying in bed over the weekend, I felt anxious to all the things I needed to do. The laundry list of things to do before you can kick back and enjoy a Sunday beer replayed over and over in my head and took more than I would like to admit of my precious weekend sleep. You know that point... when you should be sound asleep, but roll over to see single digits on the clock. A mere tragedy for feeling refreshed the next day.
I started to count beers and do all I could to relax my mind, but I was perplexed to think that... patience really is a virtue.
The older I get, the more I find that patience is something to be grateful for. It's an evolution of the mind. A skill that wasn't learned overnight, but over the years. I think to when I couldn't sleep before the first day of school or how I would lay in bed anxiously planning all the details of the next brewery event. Those days are few and far between, and as I age, I find maybe patience isn't about waiting. Maybe it's about knowing what's worth the wait.
When I think about it, my woes have turned into the things I merely can not control. Patience for rain (hello Tropical Storm to calm my yard worries), patience for the first fall front, patience for some of my favorite beers in the tank and patience as a parent (ok, maybe I can control that one).
I've spent a lot of years wanting things to happen faster. I'm finally learning that some of the best things happen on their own time.
After all, some of the most famed beers took the longest. Did you know Oktoberfest beers are traditionally called Märzen because they were brewed in March and then lagered through the warmer months, ready just in time for Oktoberfest? I am here to tell you, you no longer have to wait for your favorite fall seasonal. Oktoberfest season is upon us, and your trusted Märzen style island brew is flowing fruitfully in the Taproom and throughout the Houston area.
Maybe that's the real gift of getting older. It's not having everything figured out, but learning to enjoy where you are while you're waiting for what's next.
So here's to deep sleep nights and all the patient vibes for what's waiting for us on the other side of summer.
Until next time,
The Beer Philosopher
