The 12 Year Stretch

Updated: 3 days ago

Tomorrow marks 12 years of Galveston Island Brewing. From opening our doors to what seemed like an expansive space we could never fill, to literally shuffling beer from here to there to make it all fit 12 years later. It really has been a winding road of ups and downs and although we can never say that we have "seen it all" because every day brings some new surprise, I can say with confidence... we have always done our best to take things in stride, and work together as a team, to get the job done.

People say love what you do, and you will never work a day in your life. Well... there have been many of days of work- but very few that I struggle to walk through the door and begin again.

Over the years, I've found myself coming back to the same few things. Not a business plan or some grand philosophy, just a handful of ideas that have helped guide me through the good days and the hard ones alike.

Little hills. Not expansive mountains to cross, but little challenges broken apart and faced head on by a team that has the same goal.

Quality of product. The belief that every beer and every food item deserves our best effort, whether it's someone's first pint from us or their five hundredth.

Quality of service. A smile, a conversation, an opening of the door. Simple things that make people want to come back.

Community. The understanding that a brewery is only as strong as the people who choose to gather inside it.

Galveston is unique. An island nestled on the shores of Texas that has more heart and pride than anywhere I've ever known. The support from business to business, the people who show up for local events, the neighbors who champion local causes, and the willingness to lend a hand when it's needed, those things aren't common everywhere. They are here.

And inside, I've learned that a brewery isn't really measured by the tanks it owns, the awards on the wall, or even the beer in the glass. It's measured by the people who choose to spend their time here. The birthdays, fundraisers, celebrations, and even the ordinary Tuesdays that somehow become memorable and a staple in people's lives (and ours).

Twelve years in, I'm grateful that GIB has become a small part of so many stories, including mine. Weddings, babies and so many new friendships. My life would never be as rich as it is today, if I never walked through the brewery doors 12 years ago looking for a job.

As we celebrate this anniversary, I find myself reflecting less on what we've accomplished and more on the people who made it possible. Our staff, past and present. Our partners throughout the community. And every customer who has ever chosen to spend an afternoon, an evening, or even just a quick beer with us.

Thank you for helping us build something that feels bigger than a brewery. It is my second home, on my little island that brings me so much joy... and I hope it does for you too.

Until next time,

The Beer Philosopher

We are all so fortunate to have you all on the island. You all provide a wonderfully welcoming space to make these memories you mentioned above. Thank you to all of you at GIB that make it possible. ❤️
